Why don't I feel forgiven?

Repentance frees, but shame imprisons. But how to get out of this shame?

La Bible is clear about this, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us them and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." So why do we have such a hard time feeling truly forgiven? We too often feel doomed because of our mistakes yesterday and our struggles today. While guilt leads to repentance, shame condemns, oppresses, and separates from God.

Repentance frees, but shame imprisons.

Here are 3 keys to find out how to get out of this shame.

  • Listen to the right voice

At the origin of this shame which keeps us in oppression, there is the devil. He doesn't want you to be free. He wants to deprive you of the freedom that God offers you in forgiveness. The Bible says he charges everyday. So learn to discern voices. Does God convict me of sin? Or is it the devil accusing me?

To find out, remember that God never covers you with shame but offers you freedom.

And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3: 17

  • Remember the cross

Sometimes the devil's accusations seem so real. They ring true. You tell yourself that God can no longer love you after what you have done, that you do not deserve it. Yet again, the Bible is clear.

But as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his loving kindness to those who fear him; As far as the East is from the West, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103: 11-12

Divine forgiveness is supernatural. Yes, I deserved to die for my sin. But Jesus died on the cross to free me from all condemnation. The devil wishes so much that you forget the power of the cross.

So when he reminds you of your sin, remember the cross.

  • Worship your king

God no longer remembers your sin. He completely forgave you.

If your sins are like crimson, they will turn white like snow; If they are red like purple, they will become like wool.
Isaiah 1: 18

So proclaim this truth, and praise him. Sing his praises. Refuse to hear the voice of the enemy, because nothing will separate you from the love of your God.
