Eric Dufour / What is “emotional” adultery?

Usually, when talking about adultery, someone immediately comes to mind who willfully breaks the requirement of fidelity to their legal spouse, by having sex with another person.

MBut what are we talking about when we talk about “emotional” adultery? This is about the development of a relationship of friendship which gradually takes on an “exclusive” character between two people who are not married together, whatever their gender.

In his plan for humanity, God has planned to see a friendship develop between two beings of different sexes, on several levels: intellectual, social, recreational, then emotional, spiritual, and after marriage, physical. This relationship of friendship is different from the friendship that we can develop with everyone, in that it has an exclusive character: We can only share it with our future spouse.

If once married, this relationship is not maintained as much in quality as in quantity, sometimes develops with a friend, an office colleague, a sports colleague ... a relationship of friendship which little by little becomes exclusive and risks generating feelings which become at least on one of the two sides, in love.

When you find yourself drawn into an increasingly strong friendship with someone other than your spouse, beware: emotional adultery may no longer be far from your thoughts.

Any emotional adultery should be taken very seriously, as it very often results in a consummate adulterous relationship.

A thought :

CS Lewis said that “the reason we seek fulfillment outside of our marriage is because we have not allowed God to show us the depths of joy and happiness that He wants to give us in our current relationship” .

A Verse:

You have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery. But I tell you that whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Matthew 5: 27-28
