You have probably heard it said more than once, “If you think being married is difficult, wait until you have children”.
LMarriage can indeed be difficult, but becoming a parent makes things even more complicated. But as the role of parent is a challenge, so much the joys linked to fatherhood or motherhood are incomparable. It is said that the most precious things on this earth never come easy, and the education of our children is the greatest testament to that.
As a parent, we suddenly take responsibility for the life, growth and emotional, psychic and spiritual development of another human being. And this idea can be scary. Without God, we sometimes feel lost in this responsibility. Our mistakes, our failures along this winding educational journey can destabilize us and make us feel guilty. But in our failures, God is faithful to pick us up and to renew his fidelity to us.
- Raising children is expensive because they are precious
The only reason the role of parents is difficult is that children are precious.
Behold, children are an inheritance from the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.
Psalm 127: 3
Our children are an inheritance that we receive from God. They are not ours, and the legacy we receive is of great value. There is nothing more precious in the sight of God than the Christian home, and much of the nature of God is based on parenting.
- We are not alone to educate them
Once we have said all this, we rather want to run away from parenthood! We do indeed have a great responsibility as parents, but we do not carry it alone. God is with us.
By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. Far from it, I worked more than all of them, not me however, but the grace of God who is with me.
1 Corinthians 15: 10
Paul was like a parent to the local churches, and he needed the grace of God to care for them, love them, and help them grow. We need this same grace of God to raise our children.
Ultimately, what will help us meet the challenge of parenthood is the grace of God. When we rely on the Lord for the education of our children, the burden seems much lighter to us.
So, do you trust the Lord enough to count on his grace, or do you prefer to rely solely on your own strength?
