Sexual abuse in the Church: National day of prayer organized on Sunday for the victims

Sunday March 20 is organized in the parishes which wish it a day of prayer for the victims of sexual assaults perpetrated in the Catholic Church.

This Sunday, March 20 will take place the first national day of prayer for victims of violence and sexual assault in the Church. This day will have as its theme “Witnesses for a new life”.

It was during their Plenary Assembly in March 2021, during which they voted eleven resolutions to fight against pedophilia, that the bishops of France have decided to dedicate a day "to the memory of these facts and to prayer for the victims, each year, on the 3rd Friday of Lent".

According to a press release from the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF), this decision "echoes Pope Francis' invitation to live a day of prayer for victims of violence and sexual assault and abuse of power and conscience. within the Church”.

On this occasion, different tools developed by victims or witnesses and members of the CEF will be put at the service of local communities to animate this day. They include, for example, “universal prayer intentions”, a “way of the cross to meditate on” or even “a prayer booklet to walk on”.

Proposals that the congregations of France “are invited to appropriate freely” so that “all can bring victims to prayer”.
