PMA for all: infertile couples will be the big losers of the new law

With the opening of assisted reproduction to all women, experts are questioning the reality on the ground, between a shortage of gametes and queues.

AToday, Medically Assisted Reproduction is only open to heterosexual couples where the woman is of childbearing age. But, in the context of the revision of bioethics laws, the question of openness to all women arises. Couples of homosexual women or single women, all could thus embark on the delicate journey that is the PMA, as President Macron had promised during his campaign. But is it really of no consequence for the couples who currently benefit from it?

The criteria are precise to benefit from a Assisted reproduction in France at present. It is intended only for heterosexual couples, where the woman is of childbearing age. The couple or one of the two must have pathological sterility confirmed medically, or must be the carrier of a serious disease likely to be transmitted to the spouse or to the child.

But before being able to benefit from artificial insemination, IVF or embryo reception, the couple will go through different stages. Because from the infertility assessment to the first attempts, through the various interviews, the wait is long. However, with the opening to all women, Valerie Boyer, deputy LR Bouches-du-Rhône, is worried about these " Waiting lines“, Of a“ competition ”that it considers“ indecent ”.

"I find it rather indecent that we put in competition, both on the queues to access human products, that is to say gametes, people who suffer from pathologies and people who are not. sick. "

For his part, Nathalie Rives, President of the French Federation of CECOS deplores the lack of consideration of the reality on the ground. To the increase in the number of requests, she contrasts the constraints of the reality on the ground and mentions the deficit in the number of practitioners, specialized psychologists and additional technicians.

“Requests for medically assisted procreation could be doubled or tripled. In the United Kingdom, when access to assisted reproduction was extended, centers first saw a 30% increase in demand before doubling or even tripling their annual activity. While we are already in a somewhat tense situation, we fear the lengthening of the queues. "

Today, according to theNational Institute of Demographic Studies, the use of a donor represents only 5% of children conceived by ART, or less than 1300 births each year. The vast majority of children from assisted reproduction have therefore been conceived without having recourse to a third party. Yet there is already talk of shortage, and many couples turn to a cross-border appeal. Especially Spain, but also Greece and the Czech Republic.

“The shortage of donors in France does not make it possible to meet the demand of heterosexual couples who are infertile in reproductive age, in particular the demand for oocytes. "

Between “indecent” “competition”, in the care pathways, and shortage, the reality on the ground calls into question the proposals for revising bioethics laws.
