#MeToo: Would “Billy Graham's rule” be the best solution?

Little is known about the "Billy Graham Rule" in Francophonie. Across the Atlantic, many apply it, others condemn it, but some believe that it could constitute a protection within the framework of the phenomenon # MeToo ...

Lhe “Billy Graham Rule” originated in 1948, during a series of evangelistic meetings in Modesto, California. The one who would become the most famous evangelist of the XNUMXth century, Billy Graham, was only at the beginning of his ministry, but he pledged to "avoid any situation which would even have the appearance of compromise or suspicion. ". This engagement covered his relations with women, but also the management of finances, and his relations with other churches.

Today, the famous rule that bears his name mainly refers to relationships between men and women. Men who practice it avoid spending time alone with a woman, including in the workplace, in order to avoid any "temptation" or "rumor" whether or not it is founded.

But many protested against this practice, believing that it reduced women to the state of sexual objects. For its detractors, this rule harms women in the workplace, preventing them from forming a network, sharing their ideas and growing within the company.

Speaking on the Christianity Today, Tracey Bianchi even considers that Jesus did not respect such a rule, he who spoke alone with the Samaritan woman at the well, and who devoted time and interest to the women around him. He also didn't care what other people thought of his attitude.

If one questions the Bible on these subjects, chapter 5 of Proverbs is an exhortation to fight against adultery. He indicates,

Stay away from the path that leads to her house, and do not approach the door of her house ...

There is no question here of fleeing all women, but the woman who has become an occasion for stumbling.

He pursues,

May your source be blessed, and bring joy to the woman of your youth, doe of loves, gazelle full of grace: Be at all times intoxicated with her charms, unceasingly in love with her love.

Would the best defense against adultery therefore be to cultivate intimacy in one's own relationship?

Jesus was radical when it came to sin:

If your right eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away from you; for it is to your advantage that one of your members should perish, and your whole body not be cast into hell.
Matthew 5: 29

To wrest the temptation from his life could therefore be for some, to avoid any moment of loneliness with a person of the opposite sex, man or woman for that matter, if the temptation is too great.

Would the solution be individual. The “Billy Graham Rule” is one of them. It also limits the possibility of being falsely accused. Another variation is the “Mike Pence Rule” which is a variation of it and only applies to dinners.

The fact of "wresting" temptation when it arises is that recommended by Jesus. Can it be called “The Rule of Jesus”?

Its application would then depend on each one, according to what is in his own life an occasion of fall.

The debates remain open.
