Indonesian assailant attacks priest with knife in office

The scene took place Sunday, August 28 in the morning, during mass, in the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Medan, in the north of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. "An act of terrorism has been perpetrated ..." Rina Sari Ginting, spokesperson for the Medan police, said in a statement.

UA witness present in the church relates that the attacker was seated among the faithful and started running towards the priest, armed with his knife. At the same time, a small explosion similar to fireworks was reportedly heard. Fortunately, the attack did not cause any serious casualties. The priest and the assailant both suffered some minor injuries.

“What is clear is that the priest was targeted. Medan police chief of criminal investigations Fahrizal said.

For everyone, this attack echoes the terrible murder of Father Hamel on July 26 in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray.

The trail of radical Islam would indeed be the most convincing, according to investigators. A demining team has been deployed to analyze the contents of the backpack, and the police are looking for explosives in the house of the young suspected terrorist.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. The vast majority of followers practice a moderate form of Islam. Despite everything, there has been a resurgence of fundamentalism in recent years, inspired in part by militant Islamist groups such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
