"Fatima": Saje's new film in nearly 140 cinemas across France this week

What happened in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917?

While the First World War tears Europe apart, 3 young shepherds between the ages of 7 and 10, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinthe, receive the visit of an angel, then of a "beautiful lady" who appears to them 6 times between the May 13 and October 13, 1917, before revealing to the children his identity ("I am Our Lady of the Rosary") and performing a miracle on the last day of the apparitions, which could be observed by more than 70 people present. on the spot, believers or not: the famous “dance of the sun”.

The "beautiful lady", during the apparitions, confided to the children a secret in 3 parts which would cause much ink to flow throughout the XNUMXth century and which the Catholic Church would publish as and when:

The first secret, accompanied by a vision of Hell, announced an even more terrible war if one did not convert and did not do penance (announcement of the Second World War).

The second demanded the consecration of Russia to the immaculate heart of Mary, to prevent Russia from spreading its errors throughout the world (a few months later, the Bolshevik revolution will overthrow the Tsar of Russia).

And the third, which was not revealed until the year 2000 by Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) announced, with the image of a "man in white" killed in point blank by soldiers, not only the attack against John Paul II on May 13, 1981, but more broadly all the Christian martyrs of the totalitarianisms of the twentieth century, who are said to exceed in number the number of martyrs of the ten- nine previous centuries.

A great director and an international cast

Marco Pontecorvo, director of photography for several episodes of the Rome and Game of Throne series, says he is a believer but not a practitioner. He has a particular talent for filming children and this story which addresses many themes, such as that of Faith and doubt, fascinated him. He wanted, while respecting very precisely the memories of Sister Lucia (deceased in 2005), to propose a work which allows both believers and non-believers to find each other.

For this, he benefited from an imposing budget (more than $ 12 million) and an extraordinary international cast: the American Harvey Keitel (Taxi driver, The Irishman, Pulp fiction), the Brazilian Sonia Braga (Le kiss of the spider woman), the Portuguese Joaquim de Almeida (The Golden Cage, Fast & Furious 5), the Croatian Goran Visnjic (Emergency and The Boys series). Even the soundtrack is performed by Italian tenor Andrea Boccelli.

The film is released today, Wednesday October 6, in nearly 140 cinemas across France.
