Camille's editorial of April 14, 2022: Peace for Easter

In a letter sent on April 13 to the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, the president of the Commission of the Episcopates of the European Community (Comece), Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich and the president of the Conference of European Churches (Cec), Pastor Christian Krieger, called for a truce in Ukraine for Easter from midnight Sunday April 17 until midnight April 24, the day on which the Orthodox celebrate Easter.

A request that echoes the call of Pope Francis who, on Sunday April 10, asked that arms be laid down for an “Easter truce”. He also called for this "truce" to be a first step towards peace and "real negotiation".

It is also the wish of Franklin Graham who said he also wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky submitting the same request. Billy Graham's son is expected in Ukraine on Sunday to preach on Jesus, "the Prince of Peace", a message that, according to him, "the whole world needs to hear".

We can also pray for peace in Nigeria as Sunday, hundreds of armed men, of Fulani origin, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide carried out a joint attack in several communities in the Kanam regions, in Plateau State. Once again, the toll is dramatic: there are at least 142 dead, 156 injured while 70 people were kidnapped.

The editorial of the day concludes with a message addressed by the French episcopate to the Catholic faithful, which on the occasion of Holy Week urges them to go to the polls in the second round of the presidential elections.

If they do not give voting instructions, the bishops call for voting "in conscience, in the light of the Gospel and the social doctrine of the Church".
