Shooting in a school: the heartbreaking forgiveness of a bereaved grandfather

"It hurts like hell. It hurts too much because besides being a grandson, he's a son, he's a friend of mine, he's a partner, you know?"

Luan Augusto, 16, died Tuesday morning. After being hospitalized in very serious condition, he did not survive the bullet that lodged in his head. He is the second victim of the shooter who entered his school on Colégio Estadual Professora Helena Kolody, in Brazil, and opened fire there.

Upon learning that his grandson had been shot, his grandfather, Valdomiro Augusto da Silva, showed unspeakable pain.

"It hurts like hell. It hurts too much because besides being a grandson, he's a son, he's a friend of mine, he's a partner, you know?"

His grandson's girlfriend also died.

"I understood that God wanted them to be together," says Valdomiro. THEauthor of the facts, a 21-year-old former student of the school, was arrested by a teacher, who had just completed safety training. He managed to subdue him until the military police arrived. Twelve shots were fired inside the school.

On Tuesday evening, the shooter was found dead in his cell. Asked about this, Luan's grandfather replied with forgiveness.

"As a father and a grandfather, I forgive him, I didn't know him, I have no grudges. What he did, God will judge. He will settle accounts with God."

It's the killer's mother that the grandfather thinks of.

"I don't hate him for killing my grandson. God will take care of him. How is that boy's mother? You imagined."
