On April 7, a camp for displaced people was attacked by Fulani in Nigeria, in the Middle Belt. The organization Aid to the Church in Need mourns the deaths of at least 35 predominantly Christian farmers.
Father Remigius Ihyula, from the Diocese of Makurdi, coordinator of the Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace, testifies to the situation.
"The Fulani entered a displaced persons camp to kill these innocent souls. There are over 35 dead and countless injured. It has been a dark Holy Saturday for us here."
It was in a school that serves as a refuge for people fleeing insecurity that the attack took place. However, in front of this school is a police station, as explained Remigius Ihyula.
"[The place] is well known and used as a refuge for people from nearby settlements like Udei, who occasionally come to the school to sleep [or] stay because of fear and insecurity. in their village. Next to the school is the house of Zaki Bernard Shawa, who also lost two children in the attack, while opposite the school is the Makurdi-Lafia highway with a post of police control."
Bernard Shawa's two children were shot while running. Other victims were killed in their sleep.
The diocese of Markudi alone has seven camps hosting 2 million displaced people, mostly Christians.
