An American commission concerned about "the preservation and protection of Armenian places of worship" in Nagorno-Karabakh

USCIRF Commissioners Reveal Concerns Over Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict.

The latest report of the American commission on international religious freedom (USCIRF) placed Azerbaijan on the "Special watch list" for having “committed or tolerated serious violations of freedom of religion”. The report specifically highlights the situation of Armenians in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In the context of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, experts say they are concerned "regarding the preservation and protection of Armenian places of worship and other religious sites in these regions". USCIRF points to bombardment of Ghazanchetsots cathedral, to Sushi, specifying that this could constitute a "war crime".

They also denounce "the vandalization and destruction" of Armenian tombstones following the ceasefire agreement, even though "Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pledged to protect Christian churches and specified that the 'Christians of Azerbaijan' would have access to these places of worship ”.

“At the end of the reporting period, there was evidence that some of these sites, such as the cemetery of an Armenian church in Hadrut, had already been vandalized. "
