Archbishop Laurent Ulrich appointed Archbishop of Paris

On Tuesday April 26, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Laurent Ulrich of Paris. He succeeds Bishop Michel Aupetit who resigned from his post last November.

Mgr Laurent Ulrich, who until now was Archbishop of Lille, was appointed Archbishop of Paris on Tuesday April 26 by Pope Francis.

Born in Dijon in 1951, Laurent Ulrich was ordained a priest for the diocese of his birthplace in December 1979. Holder of a master's degree in philosophy as well as a master's degree in theology, it was in June 2000 that he entered to the title of archbishop, being appointed to Chambéry.

Archbishop of Lille since 2008, he received the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 2017. A distinction he saw as a way of recognizing, "the contribution of the Church to the good of the Nation and the humanity,” according to an article published in Lillenews.

He is currently President of the Council for Catholic Education of the Conference of Bishops of France and Chancellor of the Catholic University of Lille.

according to a press release from the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF), the man of the Church said he was going to Paris with “the joy of believing” which has been his “motto for a long time”.

The installation of the new archbishop of Paris will take place on Monday May 23, in the Saint-Sulpice church in the 6th arrondissement.

Bishop Laurent Ulrich succeeds Michel Aupetit. He had resigned last November., after the publication of an investigation in Le Point which suggested that he had an "intimate relationship" with a woman in 2012. appeared to [him] on several occasions”. Its governance had also been questioned.

Following this resignation, Pope Francis had appointed Apostolic Administrator of Paris the Archbishop Emeritus of Marseille, Mgr Georges Pontier. He will remain in office until the installation of Bishop Ulrich.
