3 circumstances in which we “put our lamp under wraps”

You are the light of the world. A city on a mountain cannot be hidden; and one does not light a lamp to put it under a bushel, but one puts it on the candlestick, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Matthew 5: 14-15

So many Christians die and are persecuted in the world, for having accepted to be “the light of the world”. They are responding to Jesus' call to shine in the dark.

In the West, freedom is greater but we sometimes tend to hide our light, to make it more discreet, because the gaze of others, their presuppositions, their mockery sometimes, push us to protect ourselves.

Yet we have been saved in Jesus and are called to bring the light of Christ to those who are still in the darkness of sin!

Do you want to know if you are a light in your generation. The Bible gives us elements to discover in what ways, it can happen to us to place our lamp under the bushel.

  1. Looking like the world

Therefore do not be anxious, and do not say: What shall we eat? what will we drink? what will we be wearing? For all these things the heathen are looking for. Your Heavenly Father knows you need it. Seek first the kingdom and righteousness of God; and all these things will be given to you on top of it.
Matthew 6: 31-33

  1. Sounding like the world

From the same mouth come the blessing and the curse. It is not necessary, my brethren, that it be so. Does the spring cause fresh and bitter water to flow out of the same opening?
James 3: 10-11

Let no dishonest words be heard, nor foolish words, nor jokes, things which are contrary to decorum; let us hear thanksgiving instead.
Ephesians 5: 4

  1. By not sharing the gospel

Go by everybody, and preach the good news to all of creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Mark 16: 15-16

Let us be the light of the world!
