To love is not just a word. To love is to choose to act in a way that takes care of the other. Here are 10 keys to loving according to the Bible.
Listen without interrupting
The Bible often speaks of silence and listening. To love is also to learn to listen to the other.
The one who answers before having listened is doing an act of madness and is confused. (18 Proverbs: 13)
Speak without accusing
To speak with love is to strive to get out of the guilt of the other. Let us not be of those who accuse, but of those who exalt.
Who will accuse the elect of God? It is God who justifies! (8 Romans: 33)
Give without limit
The Bible says there is more happiness in giving than in receiving. Our God is full of generosity, let us be in his image!
The desires of the lazy kill him, Because his hands refuse to work; All day long he experiences desires; But the just gives without parsimony. (21 Proverbs: 25-26)
Pray without ceasing
Because prayer is very effective, praying for the people we love is one of the most beautiful proofs of love we can give.
This is why we too, from the day we were informed of it, have not ceased to pray to God for you, and to ask that you be filled with the knowledge of his will, in all wisdom and spiritual intelligence. (Colossians 1: 9)
Respond without arguing
Arguments give way to negative feeling. Because anger prompts us to say things that we always regret, let's maintain a relationship of peace.
Better is a piece of dry bread, with peace, Than a house full of meats, with strife. (17 Proverbs: 1)
Share without pretension
To love one's neighbor is to share: to give to those who are hungry, sick or in pain. Remember that everything we have is from God, so let's share without pretension!
Share your bread with him who is hungry, and bring the poor who have no asylum into your house; If you see a naked man, cover him, And do not turn away from your fellow man. (Isaiah 58: 7)
Enjoy without complaining
When you're having a good time with the people you love, don't look at what's wrong. Complaining fuels suffering, so enjoy without a whisper!
Do all things without murmurs or hesitation. (Philippians 2: 14)
Trust without hesitation
The person you love will never be perfect. So do not wait for it to become one to place your trust in it!
Charity excuses everything, it believes everything, it hopes for everything, it supports everything. (1 Corinthians 13: 7)
Forgive without holding back
The person you love is going to hurt you. And you will do the same! While each forgives himself as Christ himself forgave us.
Support one another, and if one has reason to complain about the other, forgive each other. As Christ forgave you, so forgive yourself. (Colossians 3: 13)
Promise without forgetting
When we forget to keep our promise, then the person feels forgotten. So if we promise something, let's hurry to accomplish it!
Hope deferred sickens the heart, But a fulfilled desire is a tree of life. (13 Proverbs: 12)
